How to - exterior painting

Exterior House Painting

December 19, 2009 by affordableremodeler | Edit

Before you paint the exterior of your house you need to prep first. Your final painting finish is only as good as your prep work. First, your house needs to be pressure cleaned first, using a mild house cleaner to remove any mildew, algae, or any ground in dirt. Secondly, you need to seal all settling cracks around the house, windows, and doors, using and elastomeric sealer. That type of sealer will stretch and contract with the heat and cold to prevent cracks from reappearing again. Then you need to scrape any loose paint on the surface around the home. After that, you need to at least prime the areas that you scraped. It's preferable that you prime the exterior completely, but not necessary depending on the condition of your home. If there was chalking present before you pressure washed the home, then it is imperative that you prime the exterior entirely. Then you are ready to begin painting. Note, use a paint that is 100% acrylic on your house. We will cover painting your home after you have prepared it in the next post.
